First BeNCoRe Conference:

State of the Art and Future of Belgian Coastal Research

Objectives and scope

Since the establishment of the Belgian Network for Coastal Research, more than 50 institutes across Belgium agreed on becoming partner of the network, which aims at initiating and facilitating knowledge sharing and cooperation between Belgian institutes involved in coastal and marine science, policy and practice. This conference, which takes place the 26^th of April 2007 in Leuven provides for the first time the platform to meet the BeNCoRe network and exchange ideas on the future of coastal and marine research in Belgium.

During this one-day conference the BeNCoRe Network Ambassadors will introduce, provide a Belgian State of the Art and give their ‘personal view’ on ten coastal thematic issues related to Coastal Engineering and Observation Techniques, the Natural System, Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Marine and Coastal Spatial Planning.

The ten thematic issues will be discussed during four sessions. Each session will additionally focus on issues raised in the Green Paper on a future European Maritime Policy. This document is at the moment under consultation till the end of June 2007 outlining a European Maritime Policy aimed at developing a thriving maritime economy in an environmentally sustainable manner. Possible outcomes or suggestions from this First BeNCoRe Conference will be communicated through ENCORA to the Green Paper on Maritime Policy.

Venue

The conference will be be held in the 'Provinciehuis' in Leuven. This building recently constructed by the Portuguese architect Gonçalo Sousa Byrne is only a five minutes walk from the train station of Leuven. How to get there (in dutch)

By Train:
Leaving the main entrance of the Leuven train station, the Provinciehuis is on your left hand side about 300m up. You simply follow the promenade.

By Car:
From highway E40 take exit E314-Leuven, then immediately exit Leuven. Follow the road, pass two traffic light till you arrive at the Ring of Leuven, take a left and follow the ring. After the third traffic lights, you take a right. This road will lead you to the parking behind the Provinciehuis.
