Area of land and sea protected by statutory designations

Definition : Area and percentage of protected for nature conservation, landscape or heritage (shapefiles), clipped in a coastal buffer 20 km seawards and 10 km landwards, compared to area and percentage in the wider sub-region.
Description : The area of land and sea protected by statutory designations includes the Natura 2000 network (Habitat and Birds directives) and Ramsar sites and the local/national statutory designations for nature conservation. It does not include 'soft' protection through land use planning mechanisms, or 'no-take' zones for fishing and other human uses. The sites protected by statutory designations for cultural heritage are measured as number, not as area.
