Type locality Original type locality Devon (= Devonshire) South Coast, England. Montagu has no comments for this species on where on the Devon coast the collections were made, although he occasionally mentions locations for species. Devon localities of Kingsbridge Estuary, Milton, and Salcomb are mentioned for other taxa. The coast at and near Kingsbridge Estuary was Montagu's home territory as he lived at Knowle house, near Kingsbridge. Hutchings & Karageorgopoulos (2003) state that the original type locality was Cornwall, but this is not supported by Montagu's text. They designated a neotype from material from off Polpero, Cornwall, 50.3278, -4.5125. As this location is in the adjacent County the difference for the purpose is immaterial, but it is puzzling why they misrepresent Montagu (1813) as indicating the locality was in Cornwall. Cornwall is not part of Devon. [details]
