Abstract:

Flanders Hydraulics (FH) is a centre of expertise for research and consultancy on hydraulic engineering, nautical, hydraulic, sediment-related and hydrological issues. Its activities are spread across two sites: 

As a research institute and technical support department, we are part of the Department of Mobility and Public Works of the Flemish Government. Flanders Hydraulics supports the Flemish government in policy preparation and implementation by providing knowledge, knowledge products and advice in the field of water systems in an integrated and scientifically sound manner. In addition to activities commissioned by the Mobility and Public Works policy area, we also carry out assignments for other policy areas of the Flemish government, other domestic and foreign government agencies and the private sector. Assignments for third parties are facilitated by Eigen Vermogen Flanders Hydraulics. FH can draw on a wide range of instruments and installations. To ensure a thorough understanding of the problem and the development of solutions, we can call on: 

  • physical (scale) models;
  • ship manoeuvring simulators;
  • numerical models and supporting IT infrastructure;
  • a measuring network for permanent monitoring of hydrological and physical parameters on and along navigable waterways; 
  • instruments for measurement campaigns; 
  • the sedimentological laboratory;
  • our own documentation centre for literature research and desktop studies.
