Description
The surface water monitoring network is a physico-chemical (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, COD, BOD, nutrients, heavy metals,...) and biological monitoring network (phytoplankton and phytobenthos, macro-invertebrates and fish) with measuring stations all over Flanders. more

The surface water monitoring network is a physico-chemical and biological monitoring network with measuring stations all over Flanders. In 2000 the network consisted of ca 3250 measuring stations. A large number of measuring stations is located in water ways designated as "fish water" and/or "surface water destined for the production of drinking-water". The objectives of the monitoring network are plural:
  • determining the value of the parameters which occur in the water quality standards for surface waters;
  • determining the water quality by means of indices and water quality classes;
  • testing of results against the legal standards;
  • examining the impact of specific situations on water quality (for instance evaluation of the performance of purification plants, evaluation of investments projects, sanations, accidental spills,..);
  • knowing the water quality state as basis information for the elaboration of General Water Quality plans, advisements on permits,etc.
