Abstract
This paper reports on an investigation into the lower Forth estuary where a combination of hydrodynamic, dye and salinity measurement techniques have been employed to quantify the effects of temporarily varying vertical and transverse density gradients on the diffusion and dispersion processes. It is concluded that the interaction of velocity shear and weak longitudinal salinity induced density gradients produces a complex and profound effect on estuarine solute mixing processes
