The 'Super storms. How to protect ourselves?' conference is about the need for efficient and sustainable flood protection in Belgium. Why is it necessary? What is the danger? How should we protect ourselves? National and international experts explain how the current shortcomings can be remedied to avoid future disasters.Keynote speakers is Ray Nagin ex-mayor of New-Orleans, wuring the storm Katrina.
Studies have shown that the belgian coast is insufficiently protected against super storms that can raise the sea level by as much as 8 meters, causing the flooding of the entire coastal area and the hinterland. The economic damage would amount to several billions. Thousands of people would die.
Our vulnerable coast area, its population and visitors, need to be protected against climatological changes. Sooner, rather than later...
'Super storms. How to protect ourselves?' is a conference that brings alarming testimonies of national and international experts highlighting the need of an effectual and efficient flood protection policy.
After all, the question is not "if" it will happen. The question is: when?
