Originally, the Pacific brown-banded sea-spider Ammothea hilgendorfi occurred in the coastal areas of the tropical and northern Pacific. Later, via international shipping, the species has been transported as far as the Mediterranean (1979, Venice Lagoon) and the British coast (1978, Southampton). From there, the species spread further to the south of England towards the North Sea. The first observations in the North Sea date from 2010 (Essex, England). It is not known whether the species has a negative impact on the ecosystem.
