PLOBS - Pleistocene palaeolandscape of outer BCS
Title
PLOBS - Pleistocene palaeolandscape of outer BCS
Description
Pleistocene palaeolandscape of the outer Belgian continental shelf The goals of this PhD research project are to map the Pleistocene palaeolandscapes of the outer Belgian Continental Shelf, reconstruct their evolution through time, and establish their connection with adjacent regional palaeolandscapes of the Netherlands, France and the UK. In recent years a large amount of new acoustic and geotechnical data have been obtained in this area, which reveal for the first time that much more of the Pleistocene deposits have been preserved than previously thought. This opens perspectives to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the area during the Pleistocene. That said, there are some geophysical data gaps that need to be filled with sub-bottom profiler and sparker measurements. Furthermore, ground-truthing is needed to link lithological information to the seismo-stratigraphy, and to enable dating and palaeoenvironmental analyses.
