The effect of W3-polyunsaturated fatty acids on the metabolism, survival and development rate of larval Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) fed enriched Artemia nauplii

The effect of w3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (w3-PUFAs) on the metabolism, survival and development rate of larval Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) was investigated. The larval rearing was carried out in a 15 litres biological recirculation system at a stocking density of 10 larvae per litre. Temperature and salinity were maintained at 28 ± 1°C and 12 ±1‰, and the larvae fed Artemia metanauplii enriched with 3 different boosters containing different levels of w3-PUFAs: 1) Artemia metanauplii enriched with no w3-PUFAs (Diet n°1). 2) Artemia metanauplii enriched with medium levels of w3-PUFAs (Diet n° 2). 3) Artemia metanauplii enriched with high levels of w3-PUFAs (Diet n°3). The cumulative survival was estimated by counting the larvae every 5 days, and development rate estimated on basis of larval metamorphosis . Biochemical analysis were performed on the diets to evaluate the nutritianal value with reference to M. rosenbergii requirements. Artemia metanauplii enriched with a high content of w3-PUFAs resulted in the best survival and development rate of the prawn larvae. Metanauplii enriched with no w3 -PUFAs did not improve survival and development rate compared to newly hatched nauplii.
