Abstract
    This paper identifies and considers types of strandings, ranging from single live animals to the stranding of mixed dead species. The nature of the stranding event itself can provide clues as to its cause. Recent major dolphin stranding events in Europe are reviewed and their causes considered, with particular reference to helping to evaluate the recent sperm whale strandings in the North Sea region.
