Abstract
    The titan acorn barnacle Megabalanus coccopoma originates along the western coasts of Central and South America. This barnacle was first observed in Europe in 1851 on the hull of a ship moored in Le Havre, France. In Belgium, this non-native species was observed for the first time in 1997 on buoys off the coast. The titan acorn barnacle is an opportunistic species and part of the fixed fouling community of ship hulls and other hard surfaces. Moreover, it competes with indigenous barnacles.
