MAFCONS is made up of seven separate work packages (tasks). The first six cover the main scientific
work to be carried out and the seventh covers the overall management of the project. |

| WP 1: |
To develop a management protocol that would enable fisheries scientists to provide managers
with advice regarding the consequences of particular management actions on other aspects of the marine ecosystem,
in particular demersal fish and benthic invertebrate species diversity.
|
|
| WP 2: |
To establish the theoretical basis of the ecology underlying the tools used to develop the
management protocol.
|
|
Collecting the data to test hypotheses derived from the ecological theory (WP2),
and to enable application of the management protocol (WP1), in the future, are the main goals of WP3, WP4 and WP5.
Sampling to fulfil the needs of WPs 4 & 5 will be carried out by each partner in the areas indicated in this
chart.

| WP 3: |
To derive a detailed understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns of disturbance to the ecosystem
caused by fishing in the North Sea.
|
|
|
| WP 4: |
To determine spatial variation in benthic invertebrate productivity, species composition and species diversity
across the North Sea in each of two years.
|
|
|
| WP 5: |
To determine spatial variation in groundfish species diversity across the North Sea in each of two years
|

In developing the overall management protocol that will enable managers to consider
the consequences of changes in management of North Sea fisheries on the wider ecosystem (WP 1), it is important
that the relationship between the management unit (e.g. the total allowable catch of Haddock) and the ecological
disturbance associated with the level of fishing effort required to meet that TAC is understood.

| WP 6: |
To determine the relationship between TACs, landings and the pattern of fishing effort needed to attain
these catches.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Work package seven (WP 7) covers project co-ordination, management and dissemination.
The linkage between the six primary work packages is illustrated in flowchart 1.
The role of WP7 is to ensure that this linkage operates effectively.
