| Abstract |
The annual changes in female eel-pouts (Z. viviparus) living in brackish water were studied. (1) Although the adults are smaller in size in brackish water than in seawater, the full-grown embryos reach the same dimensions as in the North Sea. (2) Only one reproductive cycle a year could be established, with ovulations in Aug, fertilisation in Sept and parturition in Jan. (3) The plasma Calcium concentration increases during maturation of the gametes but is at a lowered level during gestation. (4) Haematocrit values drop at the time of ovulation, remain low during the period of gestation and increase again after parturition. Plasma total proteins remain at a relatively steady level. (5) The inorganic ion balance between plasma and embryotrophe is roughly equal. Ca and Mg ions are significantly lower in the embryotrophe. (6) Embryotrophe contains very little protein and its free amino acid content is low as compared with that of plasma |
