Abstract
Due to the building of dams in the Grevelingen estuary the tidal influence has been eliminated and under the present conditions wind induced water circulation is the main cause of any water movement which is still taking place. In the south western part of this salt water basin in a period without wind and simultaneously a sharp rise in air temperature stratification in the water may occur in the deeper parts of the basin. When a thermocline has been formed, the exchange of water and oxygen between hypolimnion and epilimnion is being reduced considerably. Biological and chemical oxygen demand may then lead to oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion. This article shows that under controlled circumstances the water quality was considerable improved by artificial destratification. Special attention has been given to the physical, chemical and hydrobiological aspects.
