Abstract
A common problem of pulse-mode sonar systems which utilize range gating is the range ambiguity caused by echoes from objects at multiple distances returning simultaneously. Research conducted at the Naval Ocean Systems Center, Oahu, Hawaii, investigating bottlenose dolphin echolocation indicate that there is adequate varying of consecutive interpulse intervals (jittering of the repetition rate) to eliminate range ambiguity and range-ambiguous interference in this biological sonar system.
