Abstract
The sea between Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, and Scotland is a region of complex hydrography that has been frequently surveyed. However, it is a dynamic region in which the features change quickly, and there is much spatial and temporal variation. CTD surveys are too slow to cover much of the area, and stations are too widely spaced to see the smaller-scale features, while XBT/AXBT surveys omit salinity. During July and August 1990 an extensive survey was made of the region using SeaSoar, a shallow CTD in a hydrodynamically shaped body designed to yo-yo through the upper 400 m of the water column (Pollard 1986). Also used were a conventional CTD and an acoustic Doppler current profiler. The survey was divided into two parts: a coarse-scale survey and several finescale surveys.
