Abstract
We conducted our study on the size composition and spawning season of the threadfin bream, Nemipterus virgatus (HOUTTUYN), based on materials (397 individuals) obtained from the catches of trapnets and angling along the coastal area of Suruga Bay, central Japan, from 1993 to 1996. The following results were obtained. The relationship between fork length (mm) and body weight (g) was similar for both male and female fish as follows: Female: BW = 6.608 x 10-5 . FL 2.75 (r = 0.909) Male : BW = 15.160 x 10-5 .FL 2.60 ( r = 0.941)The fork length distribution of the fish caught was composed of three or four modal size groups for each season and seasonal transition of modal size groups showing growth were recognized in the size distribution. Size at first maturity of female and male fish was ascertained to be around 180mm in fork length. This fish is assumed to spawn in Suruga Bay from January to June, most actively from April to June.
