Abstract
This study of the digestive gland of two cephalopods, Sepia officinalis and Eledone cirrosa, has shown that the proteolytic activity of the organ is partially thiol-dependent. The fractions responsible for such an activity are among the proteins of medium molecular weight. When analyzed by electrophoretical means, they display high Rf values (0.6-1.0). During a digestive cycle, the total proteolytic activity varies. It decreases at the beginning of digestion, showing that enzymes have been secreted, which participate probably to the extracellular digestion. At the end of the digestive process, proteins of similar molecular weight and electrophoretic mobility as those of the proteolytic enzymes accumulate in the digestive gland cells. Nevertheless, their activity is not particularly important, and is thought to be increased only when secretion occurs.
