Abstract
    Between December 1982 and April 1984, zooplankton samples, temperature and salinity measurements were performed in Arcachon Bay (France), at eight stations along a salinity-temperature gradient. Monthly variations of temperature and salinity values were stronger at the inner sampling stations. The minimum salinity value reached in winter was the main hydrological character for all stations. The temperature gradient was marked in winter and summer, and reversed after automnal and spring homothermy. On the other hand, the increasing gradient of salinity from the inner bay to the inlet was permanent without reversion all the year round. Copepoda dominated the zooplankton (74,61%). Other components were: meroplankton (10,53%), cladocera (9,29%), appendicularia (4,91%) and chaetognatha (0,65%). Principal Component Analysis with environmental factors and cluster analysis allowed to determine species groupings and to evaluate the influence of environmental factors: salinity mostly explained spatial pattern of zooplankters. Temperature which is highly dependent on seasonal conditions explained temporal successions and density of zooplankters. Spring species of copepoda and cladocera were distinguished from summer-automnal species. Low values for both diversity and abundance were observed for all taxa in winter. However, on average, this study revealed a relatively high species richness for all zooplanktonic groups.
