Abstract
Nitrate reductase in crude extracts of phytoplankton from cultures and from natural populations from the Oslofjord (Norway) was assayed at different incubation temperatures. The temperature optimum of the enzyme was 10 degree -15 degree C and 15 degree -20 degree C for cultures and about 10 degree C for natural plankton. The utility of the nitrate reductase assay as an ecological tool is greatly diminished unless performed at the temperature optimum.
