Abstract
Asymmetric oceanic crustal blocks created in an extensional setting have been discovered beneath the sedimentary cover of the Sierra Leone abyssal plain in the Equatorial Atlantic. The tectonic event that has faulted the oceanic crust is believed to be of Late Cretaceous age and to correlate with global opening geometry rearrangements within the South Atlantic. This example of intraplate deformation may also be related to relative motion of the junction between the Central and South Atlantic Oceans.
