Abstract
A method is described which estimates the weight of flatfish on board beam trawlers. It is based on real-time image analysis of the contours of laser beam cutting the surface of the fish, at an angle, as seen by a camera perpendicular to a conveyor belt. Essentially, the volume of the fish is determined. Because the weight of fish per unit volume is reasonably constant, the weight of the fish can be computed. It is concluded that the method's error of about 5% is sufficiently accurate for commercial purposes.
