Abstract
With its origins in offshore research at SSPA, the Swedish Maritime Research Institute, Farmocean AB was set up early in 1985 to develop the concept of off-shore farming. Platfarm 3500, a semi-submersible offshore farm was the result. The farm is 3 500m³ and with the hexagonal steel pontoon 3m below the surface it can be quickly deballasted to the surface. Hereby the access is greatly improved whenever needed, for inspection, harvesting or maintenance. Boarding the farm is easy as the weather-vaned boarding gangway always points downwind. A rigid sinker-tube at the bottom of the net cage makes it possible to raise the bottom of the net towards the surface whilst harvesting. The tube has the additional advantage of preventing excessive deformation of the net in a very strong current. With covers outside the net attached to the tube by ropes, an enclosed and reduced volume of water is created within the cage, where the fish can be treated against parasites. The waterproof computer on board the farm, controls the feeding according to a programme selected by the farmer. The efficient conveyor system installed on Profarm 30, a supply boat developed by Farmocean, quickly pumps pellets through tubes and hoses into the fully-insulated food container that holds 3t.
