Abstract
A qualitative and quantitative survey of phytoplankton populations was made through out an annual cycle in a NW Mediterranean estuarine zone (Anse de Carteau, Golfe de Fos) devoted to mussel breeding. During blooms there is a predominance of diatoms like Chaetoceros compressus, C. curvisetus. Skeletonema costatum and Nitzschia seriata •: lt should be noticed also that the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum may exhibit occasional blooms. During winter little chlorophyceae can reach up to 80% of the total numbers. The taxonomical composition of Carteau phytoplankton is rather similar to those of neritic marine communities and thus confirms the distinctiveness of this zone compared with other parts of the Gulf of Fos. The same holds true for phytoplankton abundance (maximum: 2,6.106 cells. 1- 1 ) which, though higher.-than in strictly marine coastal zones. does not reach to the luxuriance of diluted zones of the Gulf of Fos. The 0-2 m layer moderately freshened, is still richer than more marine deeper waters. Diversity values show up that this estuarine environment, though an enriched one, is not unbalanced for all that. The range of cell sizes and volumes is very wide. from a little Chlorella (less than 2 1-1m3 ) to the gigantic Rhizosolenia styliformis (232,000 1-1m3 ) but the size of bloom species is suitable for the filter-feeder Mytilus galloprovincialis. Species diversity remains rather high even during blooms. which prevents from nutritional deficiency. One must observe the scarcity of plankton cyanophytes and the low diversity of dinoflagellates (14 spp.). two classes including toxic species. Thus in spite of notable variations throughout the year. the phytoplankton compartment of the ecosystem seems in all respects favourable to mussel breeding.
