Abstract
Anatomical and allozymic molecular genetic data are used to compare populations of nominal Hydrobia truncata (Vanatta) from the Chesapeake Bay side of the Delmarva Peninsula (a locality close to the type locality) with nominal Hydrobia totteni Morrison from Long Island, New York, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Few morphological differences were found. The greatest Nei "D" between the Delmarva population and the others was 0.018 (30 loci, 49 alleles). We conclude that all populations belong to a single species, H. truncata. Significant ecological and faunal assoclation differences between regions are discussed. The nominal species Cingula laevis DeKay is not Identifiable and thus should not be considered to have priority over Hydrobia truncata. The problem of the possible conspeciflcity of American H. truncata and European H. ventrosa (Montagu) has yet to be resolved.
