Abstract
Triploid sea bass were obtained and reared in duplicate groups under natural conditions. Macroscopic observation of the gonads showed marked effects in triploid females, which had rudimentary ovaries. Histological analyses revealed that adult diploid females had vitellogenic oocytes, while triploid ovaries contained mostly oogonia. In contrast, diploid and triploid males exhibited similar gonadal development, although no spermiating males were observed in triploids even at 4 years of age. Plasma levels of estradiol and testosterone were lower in triploid than in diploid females, while testosterone levels in males were similar in both ploidies.
