Abstract
Primary and secondary production was followed in a floating pond supplied with nutrient-rich water from below the halocline and euphotic zone in Alberni Inlet, a fjord in British Columbia. Both inlet- and pond-water were monitored for nitrate, phosphate, chlorophyll and adenosine triphosphate over a 9 day period. The interpreted results suggest that the growth of biomass in the pond became nitrogen limited, after which, at pseudo-steady state, the autotrophic biomass was about 686 mg C/m², and the heterotrophic biomass 288 mg C/m². Net primary production under these conditions was 313 mg C/ m²/day and heterotrophic production was 82 mg C/m²/day. This would indicate that 33% of the net photo-assimilated carbon was being excreted as dissolved organic carbon during this period. The obtained values are considered as minimal because of uncertainty in the C:CHL:ATP ratio used. The conclusion reached is that an efficient system would have to include animals feeding on planktonic heterotrophs as well as on autotrophs and phytodetritus.
