Abstract
In the Grevelingen estuary, The Netherlands, phytoplankton primary production was measured during 2 years. The amount of organic carbon assimilated in spring was calculated, and related to the decrease of inorganic nitrogen nutrients. From this relation a C/N ratio was calculated and this ratio was compared with ratio-data from literature. From this comparison, it was concluded that the decrease of inorganic nitrogen nutrients in spring was caused by assimilation and not by tidal exchange with the sea. The estuary thus acts as a nutrient trap.
