Abstract
The tank breeding of oyster larvae is desirable for several reasons. Experimental tanks with running seawater never led to success. The provision of an adequate amount of the right food for oyster larvae, small naked flagellates, is possible since COLE found a method to control the number of these organisms in experimental tanks. Difficulties may still be encountered, especially in shallow tanks. In all probability the main reason for failure in enriched tanks is the accumulation of toxic external metabolites produced by flagellates or other phytoplankton organisms. It could be demonstrated that even in open water similar toxic conditions may prevail and that the greatest care should be exercised in choosing the right kind of water for tank-breeding experiments.
