Abstract
A comparative study of the chemical composition of flexible and hard parts of the cuticle of Sipunculids was made on four species: Aspidosiphon clavatus Diesing, Golfingia vulgaris (de Blainville), Phascolion strombi (Montagu) and Sipunculus nudus L. The histochemistry confirmed that collagen takes part in the composition of the cuticle in all the species studied. Non protidic cuticular material consisted of neutral mucopolysaccharides, associated with acid mucopolysaccharides in the papillae of the introvert of S. nudus. Histological and histochemical differences between hard and flexible parts of the cuticle of the body of G. vulgaris were not observed. In Aspidosiphon clavatus, a peculiar protidic material, detected by amino acid chromatography after acid hydrolysis, could play a role in the hardening of the shields, this hardening being possibly increased by carbonate deposits. Using a specific enzymatic method, it was shown that chitin was lacking in the species with a locally hardened cuticle as in those with a flexible cuticle.
