| Abstract |
Compared to dogfish embryos of Mediterranean origin, at an equal size, those obtained from the Channel (near Roscoff) showed much heavier bodies during the latest stages of development, and they had at their disposal higher amounts of yolk in the oocyte, and in their external (EYS) and internal yolk sacs (IYS). At hatching, sizes themselves differed by about 1.5 cm. The remarkable delay from the end of EYS resorption to hatching (1 /5th of whole developmental period) corresponded to a steady increase of body weight; it represents a newly described, ultimate stage in this development. Hatching was accompanied by a sudden eruption of ordinary scales and teeth, which seems to denote a common physiological control. |
