Abstract
Both understanding and adaptive management of regional systems require a true integration of ecological, economic, and social factors. This chapter describes a process of adaptive regional management that utilizes (1) integrated, dynamic, spatially explicit ecological economic modeling to test understanding, explore future scenarios, and evaluate policy options; (2) workshops involving major stakeholder groups to design, build, and evaluate the models (and in the process build consensus about the nature of the problems); and (3) adaptive policy implementations that are treated as experiments, with the results monitored and fed back into the consensus building, modeling, and policy-formulation process. A case study in the Patuxent River watershed in Maryland is described.
