Abstract
Isolates of Callithamnion hookeri from disjunct populations in Norway, the Faroes and Brittany were studied in culture. Morphological differences apparent in field material of the Norwegian and Faroes populations disappeared in culture while the Brittany isolate retained its characteristic features. A "Polysiphonia"-type of life history was demonstrated through several successive generations in culture, and hybridization experiments proved a complete interfertility between all the isolates tested. The pattern of early tetrasporeling development was studied quantitatively. The number of cells in the apical cell row at the time when the first lateral branch was formed, and the position of this branch, were determined in 100 sporelings of each kind. Significant differences in morphogenesis were demonstrated between the French isolate and the two Norwegian isolates. The results are discussed in terms of genotypical and environmental determination of adult thallus morphology.
