An important mission of the Flanders Marine Institute is to create visibility for the marine and coastal research in Flanders. We therefore invest a lot in disseminating the output of the Flemish scientists via the world wide web.
Our efforts in this respect seem to be quite successful. Please check the most recent ranking of ‘Webometrics’ (July 2010). This initiative of the Spanish CSIC-Cybermetrics Lab investigates how research institutes use the world wide web to visualise and display their research results.
VLIZ is number one in the list of Belgian scientific institutes. Worldwide, the websites of the VLIZ.be domain take position 181 out of 4000. This is 56 positions better than last year. Within Europe we hold position 83. This year we entered the European top 100 for the first time! IFREMER (France) is the only European marine institute that ranks higher.
