Abstract
Based on the recent history of accidental oil spills at sea by maritime transport, this paper presents the evolution and trends of the tools and practice concerning response at spill, booming and recovery of slicks at sea, burning and dispersion of the pollutant, action In front of and on the coastline. The presentation leads to a discussion on the point at which the response exceeds the reasonable, justifiable on clear technical, ecological and economic criteria, then becomes unreasonable, based on purely political and media considerations
