| Abstract |
The migratory behavior of Acartia tonsa and A. lilljeborgii during the total solar eclipse of 11 July 1991, in San Blas Bay, Mexico, was studied. Zooplankton samples were taken from surface and at a depth of 10 m every two hours, using two different conical nets: of 30 cm mouth, 1.0 m high with mesh sizes of 0.2 mm, and other of 50 cm mouth, 1.8 m high with mesh of 0.5 min, between 0600 and 2000 hours and were analysed by aliquotes with two quantified replicates. Both species showed high population densities during the early morning, and decreased later in the luminous phase. Their presence in the surface increased during the total eclipse phase and declined again with the return of light after midday. Another increase of these two species at the surface layer was observed at sunset, first by A. tonsa and later by A. lilljeborgii. |
