| Abstract: |
The annelid polychaete Polydora ciliata can bore into rocks and mollusk shells which are thereby colonized by them. On the shores of Boulogne-sur-Mer (France), this species colonizes the intertidal rocky zone. The intensity of colonization varies from one rock to another and also upon the same rock. A study of the mineralogical composition of rocks demonstrated that the more a rock is rich in quartz, the less it is colonized. Furthermore, for a particular quartz concentration, when the quartz is coated by calcareous or clay sediments, colonization is more intense. |
