Status: Gestart

Abstract

FISH-INTEL is a multi-country project aiming to understand fish movements and habitat preference in the French (Channel) England (FCE) area. This project is a collaboration of 12 partners in the UK, France, and Belgium to improve management of fish resources by implementing Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) plans, and to increase the proportion Good Environmental Status sites across the FCE area, in line with the objectives of the European Union's Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

FISH INTEL is supported by 2.8 million euros of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) via the Interreg FCE programme, to a total of 4.1 million euros. The project started in March 2021 and will run for 2 years.

Objectives of FISH INTEL
FISH INTEL will use acoustic telemetry to follow the movement of fish species that are of special interest in the region, not only because of their economic value, but also because they are good indicators of the environmental status of the areas. Throughout the project we will focus on 4 species:
- European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax)
- Pollock (Pollachius pollachius)
- Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus)
- Crawfish (Palinurus elephas)

The main objectives are to:
- Implement Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) plans in 7 sites across the FCE area to facilitate the adoption of EBFM programmes by French and English authorities managing shared stock resources
- Improve habitat and water quality, increasing the economic value of the restored habitats
- Engage 140 key organisations and participants, ensuring replicability in the area and future maintenance
