Abstract |
The pollution of the beach waters has been for years a constant source of anxiety for the Flemish sea-side resorts. Before the second world-war already, initiatives were taken to collect the coastal waste waters, to transport and to purify them. For this purpose an interlocal society has been formed and since 1950 works have been carried out.A sewerage and several sewage-farms were constructed. The Society received 100% subsidies for the investments, but the municipalities had to pay themselves for the construction of their own sewerage. From De Panne to Knokke initial works were carried out and almost off direct evacuations into the sea were stopped. On the West- and Middle coast there stiff are a few evacuations which very soon will be connected with the sewage-farms.At these sewage-farms off the domestic waste waters are treated and, for the areas Oostende and Zeebrugge, also the industrial/ waste waters. The industries however are asked to treat their waste-waters themselves, as much as possible. The initial constructionprogramm of the Society 'Vlaamse Maatschappij voor Waterzuivering' (V.M.Z.) that amounts to 8 milliard francs, has almost been completed. In addition, the Society disposes of a quite skilful/ working service. One remaining task for the V. M.Z. is the control of the evacuations into the rivers which flow into the sea. Thus the V.M.Z. hopes that also by this way there wich flow only clear water into the sea.The last task remains for the municipalities: the very urgent completion of their sewerage. |
