Abstract
    Towing experiments of the Aquashuttle (Chelsea Instruments, Ltd) and apparatus used to measure several oceanographic parameters, were conducted in the area of Yui, close to the Shimizu Port in Suruga Bay from November to December, 1997. The Aquashuttle is composed of aquapack (CTD and flourometer), alphatracka (for turbidity) and plankton recorder (for mesoplankton). Prior to the experiements, several kinds of batteries used in the apparatus were tested for length of measuring time. The results show that alkaline batteries are useful for 13.5 hours for the aquapack alone, for 13 hours for the aquapack and the alphatracka, and also for the combination of aquapack, alphatracka and plankton recorder. The length of the measuring time was shorter with manganese batteries, which recorded less than 4 hours even for the aquapack alone. Towing experiments were repeated for five days to observe the relationship between warp length and towing speed (as the ship's speed). The warp used was stainless steel 8 mm in diameter. The lengths were 50, 90, 100, 170, 220 and 320 m, and the speeds were 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 knots. The Aquashuttle was towed close to the surface or at the surface when towed at 6 knots with a warp of 50-60 m, at 7 knots with 90-100 m, and at 9-10 knots with 170 m. Towing depths of 15-25 m were obtained when the Aquashuttle was towed at 7 to 8 knots with a warp length of 320 m. The shuttle did not show any sign of undulation at the preset depth range.
