Abstract
The project 'LED there be Light' aims to develop and optimize
innovations in professions practiced by Belgian fishermen to reduce bycatches and/or optimize commercial catches. In this way, the project will
optimally assist the sector in dealing with the landing obligation and
Brexit. The main focus of the project is on the beam trawl fleet, where (1)
promising innovative ideas to improve the selectivity of the net will be
tested on board research and/or commercial fishing vessels at the
request of the sector and (2) innovative applications of light in beam
trawling will be investigated.
Fishing techniques that are currently practiced by a minority of the fleet
but which have a lot of potential in the context of fleet diversification are
also part of the project. Research will be conducted into the innovative
application of light in plate fishing, flyshoot fishing and passive fishing.
The project provides for a number of sea trials for each technical
innovation and profession, during which we will collect data on board
commercial vessels and research vessels (RV Belgica and RV Simon
Stevin)
