Abstract
The majority of fertile seeds in a 70 year old plantation are 'weed' seeds in the litter layer. The original dune seed-bank is diminished. The initial response to clear-felling is the establishment of a weed community characterised by Senecio spp and Chamaenerion angustifolium. Below the needle litter, the soil is not significantly different from a typical grey-dune soil. The litter contains high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus, which can be lost quickly after clear-felling. After the first few months the remaining litter breaks down more slowly.
