Abstract
n this paper methods and results of feeding experiments are described with tintinnids from coastal waters. The diam of the largest ingestible particles was determined by using grains of starchl it ranged from 41.2 to 45% of the mouth diam of the lorica. The filtering rates under different cell concs (2 x 10 2-10 6 cells/ml) were determined by short time feeding with yeast cells stained with Congo red, followed by direct counts in the animals. The filtering rates depend on the conc of the cells. The highest values were recorded. Homogenized active C alone or together with Chlorella pyrenoidosa or with yeast cells stained with Congo red were given in order to check the ability of selection. The tested spp only take individual, large active C particles (generally > 2 µm diameter), and do not take small particles; but they extract the cells selectively. Detritus and bacteria seem to be of subordinate importance for the feeding of these animals.
