Abstract |
Samples of the sedentary Modiolusdemissus from 0.66m vertically separate areas within the intertidal zone, differ significantly in the proportion of heterozygotes at the Tetrazolium Oxidase locus. Smallest animals exhibited a heterozygote deficiency, with heterozygosity increasing significantly with age. The observed genetic differences can be due to active site-selection of larvae, or more probably differential survival of heterozygotes. Genetic differences observed between microhabitats within the tidal zone do not occur in a pattern that allows speculation concerning the maintenance of polymorphism in populations dispersed in multiple niches. |
