Abstract
Temporal fluctuations in the populations of Donax trunculus and D. vittatus at Douarnenez Bay are essentially the result of the annual recruitments. They cannot be attributed to environmental factors such as oil spills. These may be responsible for local mortalities in juveniles of D. trunculus high up on the beach; but otherwise the fluctuations will mainly result from mechanisms linked to inter- and intraspecific competition.
