Abstract
Under a Regional Aquaculture Development Program carried out at the southern Portuguese coast, a pilot-scale aquaculture facility was built by the National Institute of Fisheries. The project was conceived for an R and D program as well as a demonstration center. The conception of the facilities, and the main objectives of the program are described. An open water-system was used but semi-closed and closed circulation systems were available to avoid pollution problems and save on energy during the winter period. Three facilities were built, one of 36m³ capacity for broodstock, one of 10m³ to rear larvae, and a 39m³ nursery. A brief description of the management and of the research and development experiments are discussed.
