Abstract
Examines the amount of maintenance and environmental dredging required in European harbours. Studies the extent of contamination of harbour sediment, and surveys the amount dredged by degree of contamination. Suggests that sediment balance studies are used to help plan dredging. Dredge spoil disposal methods include land disposal, sea disposal and beach nourishment, the method used depending on the river and harbour environment and degree of contamination. Hamburg has a pilot dredge spoil treatment plant. Outlines the dredging programmes at Hamburg, Antwerp and Rotterdam.
