Abstract
Some aspects of the taxonomy, ecology and reproduction of Streblospio benedicti occurring in a mixo-polyhaline intertidal mud-flat from the Loire Estuary have been studied. At higher levels of the shore physical parameters and the mineralogical nature of sediments control the spatial distribution of populations. At intermediate levels where the action of external factors is less pronounced, and where a greater stability occurs, the chemical characteristics of interstitial water are less favourable to the establishment of an abundant S. benedicti population. At lower levels the recruiting larvae are attracted by the chemical properties of the sediment, as shown by positive correlations with chlorophyll. Temperature controls two meio-mixobenthic communities: the summer community, which is positively correlated with S. benedicti and the winter one, which shows negative correlation with this species.
