Abstract |
Biometrical studies of topes, Galeorhinus galeus (Linne, 1758), caught along Tunisian coasts, allowed to describe the main stages of postembryonic growth and sexual maturation in this aplacental viviparous shark. The relative growth of claspers speeded up when total body length (TL) was 90-112 cm, and males were mature from 125 cm (perhaps 114 cm) to 158 cm TL. Females kept juvenile genital organs until they reached 100 cm TL, thereafter maturation proceeded until 130 cm TL at least, since mature eggs appeared only at 140 cm TL. Moreover, gestation was not observed in females with TL less than 150 cm. Maximal TL was 200 cm. Fecundity showed a definite relationship to TL, with litter size (10-41 for TL 150-200 cm) lower than the number of ovarian ripe oocytes (14-55 for TL 140-200 cm). |
